With an investment of $1,000 each, a small, but enterprising group of 21 independent food retailers formed New Hampshire Wholesale Grocers out of an 18,000 square-foot warehouse in Concord, NH. Their purpose?  Combine their purchasing power to compete with the ever-increasing supermarket chain stores in the area.

Having outgrown the Concord location, we moved to a 77,000 square foot, four-story building on West Auburn Street in Manchester, NH. However, within less than a decade, AG was once again at capacity. Staying in Manchester, AG relocated to Gold Street in 1956, where our headquarters remained through the turn of the century. By 1966 and after several expansions, this facility grew to 217,000 square feet.

To better reflect the growing business and expanded geographic service area, New Hampshire Wholesale Grocers changed their name to what it is today -  Associated Grocers of New England.

Our Associated Grocers Supermarkets subsidiary is officially born when AG makes its debut into grocery retail, acquiring three stores in southern New Hampshire named Vista Foods.

In March of 2006 a new state-of-the-art 379,000 square foot facility was constructed on 75 acres of a former gravel pit in Pembroke, NH, where our headquarters resides to this day.

AG broke ground once again, undergoing a 105,000 foot expansion in December 2014 encompassing grocery, refrigerated, frozen and additional office areas. During this construction period, AG’s Dematic Multi-Shuttle automated product selection system was also installed, vastly increasing our SKU count especially within the Specialty & Organics category.

Expanding upon our corporately-owned retail locations, AG established a brand new subsidiary – Associated Grocers Supermarkets Vermont – through the acquisition of five independent supermarkets in the Green Mountain State.

AG’s rooftop solar installation – the largest in the state of New Hampshire at the time – goes live with an expected annual generation of 1.45 million kilowatt-hours of clean energy.
